US delegates arrive in Sabah to study mobile court system

KOTA KINABALU: Seven delegates from the United States (US) have arrived in Sabah for a work visit to the remote area of Paitan in Beluran.

They are New York Police Department (NYPD) counter terrorism intelligence bureau chief Tom Galati, NYPD counter terrorism Intelligence operations executive officer Paul Mauro, NYPD liaison officer Ed Lee, and assistant special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New York City office Rich Jolle.

Others are US Federal Court Judge Richard Boulware, US Embassy legal adviser Karyn Kenny, and US Department of Justice’s Regional Adviser for Cyber (US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur) Thomas Dougherty.

Upon their arrival in the morning, the delegates proceeded to the Kota Kinabalu courthouse, where they were welcomed by Judge Ravinthran N. Paramaguru.

The group is scheduled to visit Kampung Matanggal in Paitan, which is located more than 230km from here.

The objective of the visit is to gain insight on the operation of mobile courts in the state.

Mobile court services were introduced in 2007 to allow people in the rural areas to have access to legal services.

Legal officers will be sent to rural areas to set up makeshift offices for people to certify documents and to hear minor cases.

During the visit, the US delegates are scheduled to tour around villages and visit a plantation estate in the area.
