N Sembilan working to improve drainage, strengthen riverbanks in preparation for possible floods

SEREMBAN: Various areas in the state have been identified as “hotspot” locations for floods, especially near Sungai Linggi and Sungai Pedas.

Negri Sembilan Drainage and Irrigation Department director Rozman Mohamad said most of these areas were housing estates located in lowlands and near rivers.

“District offices and local authorities are all in gear to conduct maintenance work on local drainage systems in the affected locations. Cleaning rivers and drains, besides repairing and strengthening riverbanks, are some of the works being carried out to prepare for floods, especially when the state is one of the states expected to be hit by inclement weather,” he said.

Rozman said maintenance works were conducted to ensure river flow would not be affected during heavy rain, thus minimising the risk of floods.

“We are closely monitoring current developments, especially if there is increase in water levels at any river in the state. We are also working closely with other agencies in the state to prepare and provide assistance to victims should any flood occur,” he said.

Meanwhile, checks on the water level in Sungai Muar, near Kampung Tiong Tampin, revealed that the water level has exceeded the warning level of 20.19m. The normal level for the river is 19m.
