Kampung Sungai Yu land distribution: Hannah Yeoh, Selcat urged to probe misappropriation

SHAH ALAM: Selangor state government's Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) has been urged to waste no time in probing into an alleged misappropriation of land distribution in Kampung Sungai Yu, Kuala Selangor.

Permatang assemblyman Datuk Sulaiman Abdul Razak said this after he submitted letters to Selcat chairman Hannah Yeoh, who is also Selangor state legislative assembly Speaker; the state legislative assembly office; and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali on Tuesday.

Sulaiman said Yeoh should launch an investigation immediately and hold a public hearing on the matter the soonest possible as it was not necessary to wait for the police or the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to act.

He said four points in the written answers provided by the state on the land distribution meant for the Indian community during the sitting is why the matter needs to be investigated.

"The written answer stated misleading information where 18 recipients were holding fake MyKad, a majority of recipients are not from the Permatang constituent, and the awarding of multiple plots of land in a family when they are supposed to only receive one.

"There are also recipients who do not fit the requirements stipulated by the state government. All these must be investigated in detail and because it is unfair for genuine Kampung Sungai Yu residents to be deprived of the land for the benefit of outsiders.

"This matter should not be taken lightly and if there are any wrongdoings, action must taken against those involved and not just cancelling the awarding of the land to the recipient," said Sulaiman.

Sulaiman was speaking at a press conference held on the sidelines of the Selangor state assembly.

In response, Yeoh said she will be studying the written answers said to be misleading.

Yeoh said she viewed the accusation by Sulaiman seriously because it is the responsibility of all state agencies to provide accurate answers in the state assembly sitting.

"I will also call for a meeting with the Selcat committee members next week. We will look into all the allegations and we will collectively decide whether there are grounds for Selcat to investigate this matter or to have the Select Committee On District and Land Offices to do so.

"We must also consider the separation of powers as the MACC has already stepped in to investigate this matter," said Yeoh.

Last week, state exco Ganabatirau Veraman told the state legislative assembly that the police and MACC from the Shah Alam and Putrajaya offices had gone to the Kuala Selangor district and land office to seek information and had taken along with them several documents.
