Jempol villagers call for help after sudden flash floods cut off road access

JEMPOL: Villagers from Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Sampo here had to seek help from the Fire and Rescue Department to return to their homes after the main road leading to the village was inundated by floodwaters on Tuesday afternoon.

The village was hit by a flash flood following continuous heavy rain which started at 6am.

As the water was about one metre high, the road was impassable to light vehicles.

Bandar Seri Jempol Fire and Rescue Department head Roslan Seman said the department received news of the flooding at 12.37pm before 10 personnel were deployed to the location.

“A team from Simpang Pertang Fire and Rescue Department was also dispatched to the location to help the victims.

“We had to use a four-wheel drive vehicle, lorry and boat to ferry the villagers out of their homes after they were trapped for six hours. We also brought 50 villagers including students from nearby schools,” he said.

He added, as of 5pm today, no houses were flooded, but a family has been placed at the Sungai Sampo community hall while waiting for floodwaters to recede.

“We are still monitoring the situation although it looks like floodwaters have started to recede,” he said.

Besides Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Sampo, other affected villages include Kampung Sungai Taling, Kampung Bukit Perah, Kampung Lonek, Kampung Gajah Mati and Jalan Serting Tengah.
