KUCHING: The role of the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) has become increasingly important for participating nations following the growth of the global halal market.
For Indonesia, WIEF is the most significant forum to discuss the emergence of the halal industry, which has experienced growth not only in Muslim, but also non-Muslim nations.
The Republic’s Consul-General in Kuching, Jahar Gultom, said Indonesia also recognised the importance of WIEF in fostering stronger cooperation in economy and commerce among participating countries.
“Indonesia was the host of the forum last year. The function of the forum goes beyond discussing issues related to doing business based on the values of Islam.
“It also acts as a platform for participants to look for best practices in the economy and other related fields,” Jahar said during a special interview with Media Prima Bhd (MPB) at the consulate office here today.
Ongoing efforts by developed nations such as Japan and South Korea in developing the halal industry showed how the WIEF had been successful in charting the future of the global halal market.
“These nations are developing the halal industry to accommodate a demand from the increasing number of Muslim tourists.
“Back in Indonesia, the number of eateries providing halal food in Bali has increased immensely especially after the visit from Saudi Arabia’s King (Salman Abdulaziz Al-Saud) sometime early this year."
Indonesian president Joko Widodo will be among a number of world leaders scheduled to attend the 13th edition of the three-day forum.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will open the forum, which will be held at the Borneo Convention Centre here.
