55pct target to fully rehabilitate drug addicts: Nada

TASEK GELUGOR: National Anti-Drug Agency (Nada) aims to achieve 55 per cent successful rehabilitation of drug addicts within two years of monitoring time.

Its director-general Datuk Dr Abd Halim Mohd Hussin said although the agency only targeted 30 per cent initially, he believed the successful rehabilitation may increase to 55 per cent within the two years time.

He said that the agency used two methods for the rehabilitation of its trainees - psycho spiritual and psycho social.

"Spiritual method is seen as the best method to rehabilitate the drug addicts and at the same time we also educate them in vocational field, so that they will have specific skills they can develop on after they are released from the rehabilitation programme.

"The knowledge we taught them will be very useful for them, apart from that it will be easier for them to improve their interpersonal skills to mingle with the community and their family members," he said after his visiting drug treatment and rehabilitation programme in Kampung Selamat Rehabilitation centre here today.

Halim said there were now 5,200 trainees in 27 rehabilitation centres nationwide.

He said that they used a specific indexing in order to keep track of rehabilitated trainees.

"For instance, if we give nine or 10, then that person is prepared to be released from our centres and those who scored five and below will have to continue its rehabilitation programme.

"They may shorten their rehabilitation period if they showed good behaviour," he added.
