Wisma Putra confirms 6 Malaysians injured in Singapore's train collision

PUTRAJAYA: The Foreign Ministry today confirmed that six Malaysians were involved in yesterday’s train collision at Joo Koon Mass Rapid Transit Station in Singapore.

In a statement, the ministry said the Malaysian victims sustained injuries and have been taken to a nearby hospital to receive medical attention.

A total of 29 passengers were injured in the incident but no casualties were reported so far.

“The High Commission of Malaysia in Singapore is working closely with the local authorities to monitor and obtain further updates on the incident.

“Malaysians involved in the incident and require consular assistance are advised to contact the High Commission of Malaysia in Singapore,” the ministry said.

The statement said Malaysians can refer to the commission at 301 Jervois Road, Singapore, 249077; or call +6562350111/+6568876231 or email to mwsingapore@kln.gov.my.

Transport officials reportedly said a train hit a stationary faulty train at the elevated Joo Koon station in the far west of the city state during the morning rush hour.

"At 8.19am, a second train stopped behind the first faulty train. At 8.20am, the second train moved forward unexpectedly, and came into contact with the first train," regulator Land Transport Authority (LTA) and train operator SMRT were quoted as saying.

They later said the passengers and two SMRT employees had been sent to nearby hospitals with "light to moderate injuries", adding that most of the victims were discharged after treatment.
