Kedah Sultan is new UUM chancellor

SINTOK: Sultan of Kedah Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah has been appointed as the new chancellor of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), succeeding his late brother Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.

The appointment was performed by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh in conjunction with the 30th UUM convocation ceremony today.

To commemorate the contributions of Sultan Abdul Halim, UUM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said the university had agreed to set up “Sultan Abdul Halim Professorial Chair”.

Mohamed said the chair would be placed under the Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy, which was dedicated to spur research and development in administrative field.

"We are grateful that Tunku Temenggong of Kedah, Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Tuanku Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah has made a generous personal contribution of RM2 million for initial fund," Mohamed said in his speech.

At the ceremony, Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz was appointed as the UUM Pro-Chancellor for a three-year period.

A total of 5,935 graduates will receive their scrolls over five days beginning today.
