PPBM request for extension to AGM deadline, exemptions, against own constitution, Societies Act

JOHOR BARU: The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) request for an extension to the deadline for it to hold its annual general meeting goes against the Societies Act.

Registrar of Societies (RoS) director-general Surayati Ibrahim said her office, as such, would need to refer the matter to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

She said because of this, RoS would take some time to get back to PPBM as to whether the deadline could be extended.

PPBM had also asked for certain exemptions, she said.

“The exemptions requested by PPBM involved matters which fly against the party’s own constitution and the Societies Act,” she said after attending an outreach programme.

Pressed to reveal some of the requests, Surayati said some of these had to do with exemptions to regulations governing the AGM and others which had to do with PPBM’s constitution.

She said, for now, the order for PPBM to hold its AGM by next month or face de-registration was still in effect. Should it fail to hold the AGM and is de-registered, the party would not be able to contest in the 14th General Election.

PPBM is in violation of its own constitution and the Societies Act for failing to hold its AGM within a year after its formation in September last year.

PPBM leaders had met with Surayati for an hour earlier this week to try to seek a way to comply with RoS requirements.

Its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had said the party would submit a plan by Thursday. It was this plan that Surayati had talked about.
