UNI-MLC claims 20 hotels in Klang Valley practice 'no hijab policy'

KUALA LUMPUR: The Union Network International-Malaysia Labour Centre (UNI-MLC) has identified 20 hotels in Klang Valley that practiced 'no hijab policy' on women employees.

Its president Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal said the recognition was made possible based on checks and complaints received by the group.

He said the 20 hotels were located around Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya and comprised mostly international chains, with either five or six-stars.

“We will hand over the list to the Human Resources Ministry in a meeting on November 29 at 10am.

“Initially, we wanted to reveal the names of the hotels today but felt it is better to hand them over to the ministry to help with their investigation,” he said.

Shafie said the ministry should take action against hotels which are found guilty of imposing the ban on headscarves.

“These hoteliers should not deny our list because we have solid evidence of their discriminatory practices.

“They should realise that the current standard operating procedures are outdated and take this opportunity to update their policies to comply with the local norms and cultures.” he said.
