Terengganu floods worsen, with Kuala Terengganu the latest affected district

KUALA TERENGGANU: The flood situation in Terengganu has taken a turn for the worse, with the number of evacuees rising to 2,935 people from 959 families in seven districts in 74 relief centres this morning.

This marked a sharp rise from the 1,952 victims from 755 families housed at 41 relief centres in six districts last night.

Kuala Terengganu become the seventh district to be hit by floods when 63 victims from 14 families were moved to two relief centres, namely Balai Raya Kuala Ibai and Sekolah Kebangsaan Banggol Peradong.

The state Welfare Department flood portal stated that as of 7.30am, Besut tops the list with 1,348 people from 378 families seeking shelter at 33 relief centres, compared to 234 people from 104 families who were in seven relief centres last night.

The portal stated that the number of evacuees have decreased in Hulu Terengganu, with 790 people from 364 remaining at 18 evacuation centres compared to 955 victims from 449 families in 20 relief centres last night.

In Setiu, 372 people from 100 families were at nine relief centres compared to 421 people from 101 families in seven relief centres previously.

The number of victims also saw an increase in Marang, with 71 people from 23 families housed at six relief centres compared to 63 people from 17 families at five relief centres the day before.

The number of victims also rose in Dungun, where 165 people from 48 families are now housed at four relief centres compared with 149 people from 43 families at three relief centres before.

Kuala Nerus marked a decrease, with 126 people from 32 families living at two relief centres compared to 126 victims from 33 families at three relief centres last night.

Meanwhile, the Drainage and Irrigation Department said three rivers have exceeded their warning levels.

The water level at Sungai Marang at the Pengkalan Berangan bridge now stands 2.49 metres, exceeding its warning level by 0.19 metres.

Sungai Nerus in Kampung Langkap Setiu is now up to 21.39 metres, 0.64 metres above the safe level.

Sungai Chalok now stands at 7.85 metres, which is 0.16 metres above its normal level of 7.70 metres.
