New mother wades knee-high floodwaters to safety

BERUAS: A woman who has just completed her confinement has to walk through knee-high floodwaters with her baby as rising water level forced her to move safer grounds.

Maisarah Adnan, 27, one of the evacuees in Manjung district is now housed at a temporary relief centre in Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Batu, Pantai Remis here since Wednesday.

“I have just come out of confinement, so I am very worried during floods as anything could happen when the road is slippery and my baby is only 52-day old,” she said when met by Bernama here yesterday.

Maisarah from Kampung Sungai Batu was one of the 963 flood victims from 220 families placed at six relief centres in Manjung district following heavy rain since Wednesday.

“I woke my mother at about 4am yesterday as water starting to enter our house. I kept all my valuables and important documents before moving to the evacuation centre at 8am.

Meanwhile heavily pregnant Desipita Nuryanti, 32, also braved floodwaters above her knees to move to safety.

Desipita who lived in Jalan Batu Tin, Pantai Remis said it was the third time she had to walk in cold swift waters while expecting.

“Seven years ago it was during my first child when I was four-months pregnant and four years ago I again had to move to safety while expecting by second child,” said Desipita who is lived with her children and husband, a fisherman. -- BERNAMA
