Two Johor UTM students down with tuberculosis

JOHOR BARU: Two Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) students have been referred to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital after they tested positive for tuberculosis (TB).

UTM deputy vice-chancellor for student affairs, Prof Dr Durrishah Idrus, said the two students, both locals, were admitted to hospital for screening and have been allowed to return to the university to resume their studies while undergoing treatment.

"They are now being monitored by the UTM Health Centre. They have been prescribed with medicine and treatment and are required to undergo scheduled examinations so that their progress can be evaluated," Durrishah said in a statement.

She said in order to ensure that no other students infected, the health centre will be screening students who have had direct contact with the two patients, especially their roommates and those at the faculties.

"Parents do not need to be worried because TB patients can recover by continuously taking their medicine and with close monitoring by the health centre.

"To ensure all students are in good health, UTM has taken the precautionary action of conducting health screenings on all students so that they are not exposed to any contagious diseases," said Durrishah.

She advised students who have been coughing for more than two weeks and feel feverish, especially at night, to seek treatment.
