Hamas diaspora head says support needed for 'intifada' against Israel

KUALA LUMPUR: The new Palestinian uprising against Israel will not subside until the city is liberated, said Palestine's Head of Hamas in Diaspora, Maher Salah.

He said this is not the first time that Hamas had launched an intifada (uprising) against their Zionist enemy.

"This will not stop until the liberation of Jerusalem and the West Bank.

"We call on our Muslim brethren and citizens of the world to support us.

"Palestine need all the help it can get as it is a tiny, helpless state in a volatile region filled with fears of violence and repression," he told reporters at the Putra World Trade Centre today.

Maher, who led a senior delegation of Hamas to meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak earlier this week, said its members are fully ready to confront this threat following the announcement by the United States to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and moving its embassy there.

He said Hamas will defend Palestinian sovereignty in Jerusalem.

Maher also urged countries around the world to cut off trade and diplomatic ties with Israel.

At the same time, he expressed gratitude that Malaysia had vocal in standing up against the Jerusalem decision by the US.

He said Malaysians have been consistent in pushing for the creation of a free and independent state of Palestine.

“Malaysia had always expressed support and solidarity with Palestine at regional and international levels.

“We hope Malaysia would use its influence and respect in the Arab and Muslim world to lead efforts in fighting the blatant decision.” he said.
