MMEA comes to aid of boat fire victim off Labuan

LABUAN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) assisted in the emergency transportation of an injured man from Pulau Papan off here, on Sunday.

The agency received a distress call at 7.40am about the man who was burnt in a boat fire, and immediately deployed a patrol boat to the island.

The victim, identified as Abang Jaffaruddin Mohamad, 37, was transported from Pulau Papan to the Labuan MMEA jetty, from where he was rushed to the Labuan Nukleus Hospital by ambulance.

“In the incident, (Jaffaruddin) was starting the boat engine when it suddenly caught fire. The fire spread to his body and he sustained burns.

“Following the distress call, we instructed an MMEA team on patrol duty to help bring the injured victim out of the island,” Labuan MMEA deputy director (operation) Commander Nor Bakari Abu Bakar said in a statement.

He said the fire is believed to have been caused by oil leakage and a short circuit.
