RM90 Mln for beach erosian work at Kg Kolam

KUALA NERUS: The serious beach erosion at Kampung Kolam, Mengabang Telipot warrants an immediate remedial work.

Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said for the necessary work, RM90 million will be disbursed for the purpose.

He said the emergency funding came from the federal government and would be disbursed once the Drainage and Irrigation Department had completed its structural and engineering study very soon.

Razid said this after paying a visit to the area where a long stretch of the coastal road was sealed off after it had eroded, at 8pm last Sunday night following monsoonal tidal waves.

“A 6km stretch of the beach front is affected by erosion from the 2.8m tidal waves.

“The DID study will also take into account preventive measures to avert the erosion from recurring, as the area is open to strong monsoonal tidal waves lashing its coastline,” he said.

Razif announced an immediate disbursement of RM2 million to build a retaining wall along the stretch.

“This area is very popular among the tourists for seafood and other activities.

“Hence, the priority given to take remedial action so as not to affect tourism for the state,” said Razif.

Meanwhile, members of the public have been urged to stay away from the affected area, to avoid undesirable incidents.

Kampung Kolam village development and security committee head Noradira Udin said the area was out of bounds until remedial work had been complete.

She hoped motorists and the public would find alternative routes to bypass the affected stretch, to prevent any untoward incidents.
