NGO proposes to tahfiz schools to allocate places for Rohingya children

KUALA LUMPUR: A non-governmental organisation here is looking at tahfiz schools to allocate places for Rohingya children in Malaysia.

Serantau Muslim Welfare Organisation (Serantau Muslim) president Dr Raja Ahmad Iskandar Raja Yaacob said he had spoken to muftis from all over the countries and most of them have agreed with the suggestion to allow the Rohingya children to receive education at tahfiz schools.

"I have personally met the mufti of Perak, Perlis, Selangor and Penang, and all of them supported the idea.

"We want these children to be future leaders once they are back in their home country but while they are here in Malaysia, they deserve a good education for them to grow," he said.

Today, Serantau Muslim in collaboration with the Ethnic Rohingnya Committee of Arakan (ERCA) organised a back to school programme for 40 Rohingya children from the age of six to 13.

The children from the Knowledge Garden Learning Centre School in Serdang looked happy to be able to shop with the volunteers for school necessities.

As part of the programme, Serantau Muslim also contributed RM10,000 to cover the students' school fees as well as providing them with some allowance.

Minara Begum Jakir, 12, was one of the 40 students who went out to shop for basic schooling necessities with six volunteers from the organisation.

"I am so happy and grateful to get a chance to buy new clothes, shoes and bag for school.

"I love to study English the most out of all the subjects we have here and I hope we can get more teachers to volunteer here to teach us," she said.
