PUTRAJAYA: National explorer Muhammad Muqharabbin Mokhtarrudin, fondly known as “Qobin”, completed his history-making expedition by reaching point 90 degrees of the South Pole at 11.05am Malaysian time on Thursday.
Qobin, who announced his achievement via satellite phone on Thursday, said he will be spending the night at the point before leaving for the Union Glacier on Friday morning.
He completed his 111-kilometer expedition, which began at Union Glacier, in just seven days, despite the harsh weather.
Qobin will now enter the history books as the first Malaysian among 70 people in the world to be recognised as a "Grand Slam explorer".
He is also the first Malaysian, second Southeast Asian and third Muslim to achieve the recognition.
Qobin is expected to return to Malaysia early next month.
It was reported Wednesday that the explorer was facing extreme cold temperatures of -26 degrees Celsius, which caused him to suffer prolonged numbness in his fingers.
