KOTA MARUDU: A Toyota Innova carrying seven people was swept away by a strong current as it was negotiating a flooded road near Kampung Sungai Bintosan Darat here on Sunday morning.

It is learnt that six passengers managed to escape the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) through a broken window and swim to safety.

However, the seventh passenger – identified as Muhammad Asyraf Nurajim, in his 20s – was trapped.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department firefighters received a distress call on the incident at 2.56am.

The team eventually located the Toyota Innova about 30km from where it was swept away, nearly submerged in mud water – but there was no sign of Asyraf.
