More than 3,000 Pahang students miss class as floods force school closures

KUANTAN: The worsening floods which hit several parts of Pahang has forced the closure of 15 schools in four districts across the state, compared to 11 yesterday.

Pahang Education Department acting director Dr Tajuddin Mohd Yunus said the second day of the closure affected 3,132 students and 181 teachers from 14 primary and one secondary school.

In Kuantan, he said SMK Sungai Lembing, SJK(C) Sungai Lembing, SK Nadak, SK Sungai Lembing, SK Sungai Mas, SK Jaya Gading, SJK(C) Panching, SJK (C) Yoke Shian, SJK(C) Taman Tas, SJK(T) Kuala Reman, SK Panching and SK Bukit Kuin were affected.

He said SK Acheh in Pekan, SK Gintong in Jerantut and SJK(C) Mela in Lipis were also closed today.

"The schools were forced to be closed due to various reasons. Some were submerged, some were used as flood relief centres while some roads linking to the schools had been cut off.

"When we realise that the situation on the ground could pose a threat to the teachers and students, the respective school will be closed until further notice," he said.

A district education department spokesman said it might take some time before the flood-hit schools can be reopened as the premises will need to be cleaned and damaged furniture have to be replaced before lessons can begin.
