KUALA LUMPUR: The National Transformation 2050 (TN50) vision of propelling Malaysia into the world’s top 20 nations will take on a fundamentally different approach than Vision 2020.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said this was because TN50 would feature a bottom-up approach that reflected the people’s aspirations, while Vision 2020 had adopted a top-down approach.
“I see this (TN50) as a balance because we need a new vision after the year 2020 and we cannot start in 2020.
“We have to start now because we need time to gather suggestions and views from the people,” said Najib in an interview with Datuk Aznil Nawawi RTM’s “Bicara Empat Mata” programme, which was aired tonight.
Najib reiterated that TN50 was not a rejection of the Vision 2020 concept.
“I want this new vision to come directly from the people. I want a vision that reflects the people’s aspirations.”
Vision 2020, the aspiration to turn Malaysia into a self-sufficient, industrialised nation by the year 2020, is the brainchild of former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and was introduced during the tabling of the Sixth Malaysia Plan in 1991.
TN50, which covers the country’s continued development from 2020 until 2050, was launched by Najib on Jan 19 2017.
