Immediate stop-work order at building site where 1 man killed when it collapsed

KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh) today issued a stop-work order on construction activities at a building project site at Jalan Cochrane here after part of the structure collapsed yesterday.

Its director-general Datuk Mohtar Musri said initial investigation revealed that there was a failure in carrying out the construction work.

“Kuala Lumpur Dosh today issued a stop-work order and has started the investigation.

“A comprehensive investigation will continue to identify the cause of the collapse,” he said in a statement.

In the 5pm incident, four workers were levelling the floor surface on the third floor of the building when part of the structure collapsed.

Three of them managed to escape and the other worker was killed as concrete and scaffolding fell on him.

Mohtar said legal action would be taken on anyone was found to have breached regulations under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 and the Factories and Machinery Act 1967.

He said the department viewed seriously such an accident, especially when it affected workers or members of the public.

“Hence, it is the responsibility of the employers and workers to uphold safety and health issues at their work place.

“Construction industry players are urged to improve occupational safety and health standards to prevent such an incident from recurring,” he said.

Meanwhile, City Fire and Rescue Department director Khiruddin Drahman said the body of the Bangladeshi worker was recovered at 5.23am today, adding that the body had been handed to police for further action.
