Pakatan Harapan should allow for RCI on Memali if it forms government

ALOR STAR: Pakatan Harapan should pursue the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the Memali incident if it wins the 14th General Election (GE14) and form the government.

Political analyst Prof Dr Rusdi Omar said this would show the sincerity of the coalition and that of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the need for the truth to be revealed on what transpired in the tragedy.

“The RCI should be formed without any political interest,” he said the government needs to be supportive of the proposal.

Rusdi said this in response to a statement made by Kedah Pas deputy commissioner Muhamad Sanusi Md Nor expressed his doubts the RCI would be called for if Dr Mahathir becomes the seventh prime minister should Pakatan Harapan win in GE14.

Rusdi said the RCI would able to disclose the truth and clarify the reason behind the tragedy that saw 18 people killed and more than 100 injured on Nov 19, 1985.

He said findings revealed thus far were vague. The RCI, which should be carried out after the elections, will allow the truth to be told and provide answers to questions hard questions.

Rusdi also said it was important that people with credibility and without any political interest sit in RCI panel to ensure transparent and unbiased investigations.
