'My prayers have been answered'

SEREMBAN: For V. Malliga, 48, nothing can beat the joy of seeing the excitement on her adopted daughter’s face, after she received the green light to attend Standard One at SK Taman Rasah Jaya, today.

The seven-year-old girl who had been denied admission to a school here as she was classified as a non-citizen, was over the moon, especially when she was finally reunited with some of her former kindergarten classmates at the school.

“She was overjoyed to see some familiar faces - her friends. She immediately ignored my husband and I as soon as she stepped into the school – she was too eager to go to her class,” she said.

“She couldn’t even sleep last night. It was obvious that she was too excited. My daughter has been talking about her school, class, friends and teachers non-stop,” said Malliga.

“As a mother, nothing is more important than to see my daughter’s dream come true. My prayers have been answered,” she said adding that her daughter wants to become a teacher when she grows up.

It was reported that the girl's adoptive parents, B. Ganesan and Malliga, had tried to register her at a school opposite their house, but was told by the school that she must have a passport and proper documents to do so.

According to Malliga, her adopted daughter was categorised as a non-citizen due to lack of information about her biological parents.

Ganesan and Malliga, both 48, were recognised as her legal guardians when their adoption was legally completed in 2015.

Malliga, who works as a general worker at SWM Environment Sdn Bhd (SWM) said, she is equally excited to buy new text books and other necessities for her daughter as her daughter is not eligible to receive the textbook assistance scheme from the school.

“I don’t mind working twice as hard to provide for my daughter. The most important thing is that she wants to learn and I hope she will be successful one day and help other children to excel in their studies in the future.” she said.
