Pahang flood situation little changed; 1,658 people remain at shelters

KUANTAN: There has been no significant improvement in Pahang's flood situation, with the number of evacuees dropping by just seven people to 1,658 victims from 425 families as of 9am.

At 8pm last night, the state recorded 1,665 people from 426 families at 18 flood shelters in hard-hit Pekan, Rompin, Raub and Kuantan.

State Civil Defence Force director Colonel Zainal Yusoff said that Pekan remains the district with the highest number of evacuees at 1,299 people from 326 families who are taking shelter at 11 relief centres.

The centres are SK Sinar Mutiara with 375 victims; SK Permatang Keledang (322 people); SMK Peramu Jaya (119 people); SK Temai (93 people); SK Merchong Jaya (86 people); and the Pulau Manis flood shelter (75 people).

"Other flood shelters are Kampung Lamir relief centre with 55 people; SK Sri Biram (73 people); the Tanjung Pulai Multipurpose Hall (39 people); SK Seri Terentang (46 people); and SK Acheh (9 people)," he added.

Zainal said that in Rompin, 294 people from 81 families are being houses at four relief centres.

"The four are Balai Raya Setajam with 127 people; Leban Chondong public hall (67 people), SK Tekek (63 people); and the Kampung Pianggu Multipurpose Hall (37 people)," he added.

Kuantan's flood evacuee number remains the same at 56 people who have been placed at two relief centres.

"The two centres are the Sri Damai public hall with 29 people; and the Kampung Pahang public hall with 27 people," Zainal said.

He added that only one relief centre – Masjid Jamek Kuala Semantan – remains open in Raub, where nine victims are taking shelter.
