Johor floodwaters recede considerably; over 1,000 return home

JOHOR BARU: Receding floodwaters on Monday allowed over 1,000 flood evacuees in the state to leave relief shelters and return to their homes.

Heavy monsoon rains in the state over the past week are beginning to abate, leaving only low-lying and river bank areas in several districts still submerged.

According to Johor Health, Environment, Education and Information Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat, only 289 evacuees remain at six relief centres in Segamat, Mersing and Kota Tinggi.

"A total of 1,071 victims from 303 families were allowed to return to their homes today.

"The weather in areas that were affected by floods is now fair, allowing floodwaters to recede,” he said.

Ayub added that at the height of the flooding last week, the state recorded 1,360 evacuees from 371 families who were housed at 13 relief centres.

"Most people who left the relief centres today have begun clean-up works at their soiled homes," he said.
