Trade Ministry to request for more funds to set up the National Cost of Living Action Council

KUALA LUMPUR: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry will present to the Cabinet next week, its proposal to set up the National Cost of Living Action Council.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, said the ministry had to delay establishing the council in order to finalise the details.

He said it would be divided into five clusters – housing, transportation, utilities, food and beverages – and each would be represented by experts in their fields.

"The government is currently considering the amount of allowance that will be given to the experts in each cluster.

"We have shortlisted the candidates and each cluster may be represented by 30 people," he said after launching The Magic of Ong 2018 at Tesco Kepong here today.

Hamzah has stated previously that the government had agreed to the proposal in setting up the council to address issues concerning the high cost of living faced by the people.

Meanwhile, The Magic of Ong 2018 campaign, which begins today until Feb 4, aims to reward consumers shopping at Tesco.

Tesco's Chief Executive Officer, Paul Ritchie, said that they are offering attractive prices on various items in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration.

He said that Tesco is also collaborating with Kechara Soup Kitchen to help those in need celebrate Chinese New Year.
