Cops record Mahfuz's statement over remarks on Pahang Sultan

ALOR STAR: Police today recorded a statement from Pokok Sena MP Datuk Mahfuz Omar after reports were lodged against him for allegedly insulting the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah.

The former Pas vice-president arrived at the state police headquarters at 10.15am, accompanied by lawyer, Mohd Fikri Abdul Rahman and his supporters.

Kedah Criminal Investigations Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Mior Farid Al Athrash Wahid said the state police were only assisting the probe conducted by their Pahang counterpart.

Mior Farid said Mahfuz's statement would be forwarded to Pahang for further action in connection with police reports lodged against the lawmaker for allegedly uttering insulting remarks against Sultan Ahmad Shah in a video recording.

"We are just assisting the investigation to record the statement. The investigation is being handled by Pahang police," he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Mahfuz said police questioned him on matters concerning his remarks and related to the 106 police reports lodged against him so far.

"I am here to assist the police following a report lodged by the Umno Youth wing. I view this as an avenue for me to clear the air as opposed to what was being alleged by the wing," he said.

Yesterday, the Regent of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah expressed his disappointment over Mahfuz's alleged action of insulting the state ruler during a recent political talk.

He said Mahfuz, as a seasoned politician, should have known his limits and respect an elderly person, more so when it involved a sultan.

Last week, a video of Sultan Ahmad Shah resting on his bed during his birthday celebration was spread on the social media.

Following that. a recording showing Mahfuz talking about the ruler's state of health went viral.

The recording sparked a furore among the public, leading to several police reports being lodged against the lawmaker.

A news portal yesterday reported that following the Regent of Pahang's statement, Mahfuz apologised to both Sultan Ahmad Shah and Tengku Abdullah.

He said he had no intention of insulting the palace.
