Yew Tung Seang takes office as new George Town mayor

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Island City Council's (MBPP) new mayor has taken his oath of office at City Hall here.

Yew Tung Seang, who replaces Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif, is mayor effective Monday.

Maimunah is reportedly in Nairobi, Kenya, to begin her tenure as the United Nations Human Settlement Programme’s (UN-Habitat) executive director.

Yew, who was previously secretary of the local council, expressed his gratitude towards the state government for its confidence in him and pledged to do his best.

"Never did it cross my mind that a 'budak kampung' (village boy) would one day become a mayor of this famous city," he said in his speech.

Yew added that he will continue the good work left by his predecessor, especially the “Target MBPP 2018" programme; and to uphold the vision of the state government.

Also present during the ceremony were Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng; Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow; and other state executive council members.
