Guan Eng calls criticism of Penang undersea tunnel project a 'political circus'

GEORGE TOWN: Bombarded with questions from critics about the controversial proposed Penang undersea tunnel project, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the issue is becoming a "political circus".

He hit out at the state government's critics for going around with distorted information. He said: "We are not interested in going round and round with them about this project".

Lim said the facts were clear, and that the project had been conducted via an open tender exercise and completely above board.

"I don’t think we are interested to repeat (explanations) to people who refuse to understand," he told a press conference here today.

Lim also took a potshot at MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, asking him to refer to his video clip in his Facebook, for detailed explanation on the project.

This comes after the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department threw several hard-hitting questions at the state government, demanding an explanation into the tunnel project in videos uploaded in two parts to MCA's YouTube channel.

“It is meaningless to explain.

“It shows how petty (Wee) is making the issue and politicising it. They are not seeking explanations but finding fault, making something out of nothing," Lim said.

The tunnel project had raised numerous controversies in recent months, especially on the high cost with RM305 million spent on feasibility studies as well as the 21-month delay in completing it.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has since launched a probe into alleged graft, abuse of power and misappropriation in the tunnel project.

To date, three people have been arrested to assist investigation into the matter.

However, the Penang government had denied any wrongdoing on its part.
