Man's desperate bid to save drowning daughter fails

REMBAU: A man jumped into a stream after seeing his three-year-old daughter swept away by strong current near Kampung Sungai Mampat here, this evening.

In the 4pm incident, the girl was said to be playing near the stream when she suddenly slipped and fell.

Strong current, brought about by an earlier downpour, swept her away almost immediately. Her father, upon being alerted by neighbours, jumped into the 0.5-metre deep water to save her.

He managed to pull her lifeless body out after a short swim.

Rembau Fire and Rescue Department chief Mohd Fuad Majid said the department received a distress call at 4.52pm and rushed eight personnel to the location.

"When we arrived , the girl's body was already found by her father, about six metres away from where she was last seen. It is learnt that the incident happened after the rain," he said.

Mohd Fuad said the victim's father tried to perform cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on her before she was rushed to Tampin Hospital for further treatment in Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) ambulance.

Medical personnel on duty pronounced her dead upon arrival at the hospital.
