Fama expands Jimat Belanja Dapur programme to help with rising cost of living

PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) will expand its "Jimat Belanja Dapur (Save Your Grocery Budget)" campaign to 706 daily agro markets (pasar tani) nationwide beginning February in a concerted effort to help the people cope with rising cost of living.

Its entrepreneurship development director, Rosilawati Abu Hassan said the Fama budget-saving campaign offers between five to 20 per cent discount on 27 essential items, including onions, chillies, fruits and vegetables.

"We also sell chicken at RM7.30, which is cheaper than the market price of RM8.50," Rosilawati told reporters after touring the agro market here this evening.

"No middle men are involved and Fama source for the products directly from the farms via its Dengkil operational centre."

The campaign will also be held in all Fama retail outlets, including MyFarm Outlet and Agrobazar Kedai Rakyat.

Putrajaya has been chosen as the first venue for the enhanced nationwide campaign because its agro market can pull in a total sales of more than RM2 million per month.

"Most of the shoppers here are government servants from the lower to the middle income group.

"We are expecting to attract 4,000 people as compare to the usual 2,000 people here because of our budget-saving campaign," Rosilawati added.

There are 150 entrepreneurs involved in the Putrajaya agro market and 340 canopies have been set up for the event.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is expected to launch the nationwide super saver campaign in February.

The total sales of agro markets in Malaysia reached RM861 million last year.
