Security will be top priority during Thaipusam: Zahid

PUTRAJAYA: There will be no compromise on people's safety and security during Thaipusam celebration, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

Pointing out that the government has always given priority to safety, he said the relevant security agencies have also been informed to look into the matter and ensured that the celebration went on smoothly.

"I have instructed the security forces to be ready and uphold public safety," said Zahid in a statement today.

Thaipusam, which takes place tomorrow is to commemorate the event where Lord Murugan received the sacred spear from his mother Goddess Parvati, to eliminate the evil demon, Soorapadman, and restore prosperity and human well-being.

Some 1.5 million Hindu devotees and tourists are expected to attend the celebration in Batu Caves this year.

Tourists and devotees are also expected to converge for Thaipusam celebrations at the Sri Arulmigu Balathandayuthabani Temple in Penang, Arul Subramaniar Temple in Ipoh, Perak and Johor.

Zahid, who is also the Home Minister, extended Thaipusam greetings to all Hindus in Malaysia.

"Thaipusam is the second biggest celebration for the Indian community after Deepavali.

"The Thaipusam celebration at Batu Caves is huge with hundred thousands of Hindus from across the globe will make their way there.

"It has become an iconic tourist attraction of global scale," said the deputy prime minister.

He added that celebrations such as Thaipusam reflected the beauty of a multi-racial society in Malaysia.

"Every faith and culture in Malaysia can flourish here, without being imposed any form of blockage.

"The freedom of religion is guaranteed under Article 11 of the Federal Constitution," he said.

All this is possible due to the consensus of leaders under the Barisan Nasional leadership, allowing Malaysia to maintain its multi-racial society, said Zahid.

"I hope the Thaipusam celebration will forge closer ties among the people of various backgounds.

"The government continues its commitment to develop economy, education and social structure of the Indian community.

"We want the Indian community to stand as tall as the other races." Zahid added.
