'Only 6 per cent sugar content in Milo drinks'

KUALA LUMPUR: Nestle (Malaysia) Bhd yesterday recommended that people mix Milo with milk powder and water to ensure a balanced diet.

Nestle (Malaysia) Bhd dietician Nurul Illiani Ahmad said Milo, in its powdered form, contained milk, malt, cocoa and sugar.

“We recommended five teaspoons of Milo for every 200ml serving. That serving only contains six per cent sugar. Out of that six per cent, three 3 per cent is natural sugar, which comes from the milk and malt and the other three per cent is added sugar.”

Nurul Illiani said the 40 per cent sugar stated on the packaging label was the total sugar for the whole package of Milo powder before adding water.

“After 200ml of water is added, the sugar content is only six per cent for the entire drink,” she said in a statement.

The statement comes following a video clip which went viral recently where a man warned Malaysians that Milo had a high sugar content.

The video garnered over 700,000 views and was shared 18,000 times.

Nurul Illiani said Milo contained vitamins and minerals, including vitamins B2, B3, B6 and B12, protomalt, which is a malt extract which gives a combination of different types of carbohydrates to provide energy, and Vitamin D which aids the body’s absorption of Calcium.
