Despite touted as a hot seat, Liow will defend Bentong in GE14

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said he would defend his Bentong parliamentary seat in 14th General Election (GE14).

The Transport Minister who is the incumbent said he would defend the seat as he had been working so hard for the constituency.

"I have a blueprint for Bentong, to make it a satellite town for the greater Kuala Lumpur.

"Futhermore, Bentong needs a people’s representative that can transform the town and at the same time has good support from the government to implement such an important transformation agenda," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after handing over Chinese New Year goodies to Electric Train Service (ETS) passengers in KL Sentral today.

Liow was asked to comment on whether he will defend the seat which is touted to be among the hot seats in GE14.

He said Bentong had always been a traditional MCA President seat and as such one of the hot seats during a general election.

"As the seat belongs to the MCA president, many parties are trying to get it as well.

“I do not mind if others trying to get the seat as well.

"For me at Barisan Nasional (BN), we are commited in developing our country and our area.

"Unlike the opposition, they only come to ruin everything. They will use issues such as high cost of living and price increase, which they claim was caused by the BN.

“I will definitely defend Bentong," Liow said.

In the 13th General Election Liow won the seat by a slim 379 votes. He has been Bentong MP since 1999.

The New Straits Times today reported that rousing showdowns are set to take place in 46 parliamentary seats in GE14.

Incumbents in these hot seats that were won with a slim majority of fewer than 3,000 votes are expected to experience stiff competition and receive greater attention from party leaderships.

Other than Bentong, the others seats touted to see intense competition include Arau, Jerai, Pensiangan, Teluk Intan, Bera, Titiwangsa, Segamat and Kota marudu.
