Govt reviewing 3 elements before RCI on Memali can be formed

BAGAN DATUK: The government is currently reviewing three elements before the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate 1985 Memali incident can be formed, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

"For the first element, we want to see if there was an instruction for the police to shoot dead, not only Ibrahim Libya but others too.

"For the second element which is based on the instruction (first element), we hope it doesn't relate to politics or safety factors.

"For the third element, we want to see if there is a mistreatment element. RCI will act to investigate who was the important figure who gave instructions to launch an operation in Memali," he said.

Zahid who is also Bagan Datuk member of parliament said this during a press conference after attending luncheon with the police force at Hutan Melintang police station here today.

"There are so many aspects and elements that need to be thoroughly viewed before any decision can be made.

"This matter will be brought to the Cabinet to decide the suitable time to form the RCI," he said.

A total of 18 people were killed including four policemen in the Memali incident.

The tragedy also left many others injured after the police launched an operation to arrest a religious teacher, Ibrahim Mahmud, who was popularly known as Ibrahim Libya.
