3 maintenance workers hurt in KL gas leak incident

KUALA LUMPUR: Three maintenance workers were injured in a gas leak incident at the Standard Chartered Tower in Jalan Sultan Ismail, here today.

In the 3.52pm incident, the trio, aged between 54 and 64, were conducting checks in the generator room when they became exposed to carbon dioxide gas leak for about 10 minutes.

City Fire and Rescue Department director Khirudin Drahman said firefighters arrived just in time to pull the three men out to safety.

"When the team got into the generator room, the three workers were already unconscious on the floor.

"One of them had a head injury, believed to have knocked into a hard object when he fainted.

He said all the victims have been rushed to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment.

"Checks showed the three workers were trying to bring out an old generator set and believed to have unintentionally stepped on one of the cables causing the carbon dioxide to leak.

"Another workers who was outside the room saw the incident and immediately alerted his superior. His quick action probably saved his colleagues,"

Khirudin said the situation has been brought under control after an overhaul operation was carried out.
