MMEA thwarts attempt to smuggle 5,000 packets of cooking oil

TAWAU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled an attempt to smuggle out over 5,000 packets of cooking oil to a neighbouring country, this morning.

In the 8.30am incident, a Malaysian man and an Indonesian national were nabbed after enforcement personnel discovered the RM13,200 worth of controlled goods in their boat.

Tawau MMEA director Captain Romli Mustafa said the boat was intercepted at Logpond waters, near here

"The boat was heading towards the direction of Sungai Haji Kuning at Pulau Sebatik.

"The Malaysian man is the boat skipper while his crew holds a valid Indonesian passport," he said.

Apart from cooking oil, the team also confiscated the boat with an outboard engine worth RM38,260.

Romli said all seizures and the two men were handed over to the Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry for further action.
