Guan Eng says Selangor water crisis due to 'climate change'

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng says the water crisis in Selangor, reputedly the worst in three years, is due to climate change.

Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general, says those who do not want to face problems such as water rationing should come to Penang instead.

“We admit that in the past (during Barisan Nasional’s administration) there is no water rationing, but look at the last 10 years. Many states which had never faced a water crisis before suddenly had to implement water rationing.

“Before this, there was no water rationing in Selangor and Taiping, Perak, but as of three years ago, a serious water crisis has emerged. We (Penang) are fortunate to have avoided the nightmare of water rationing.

“Penang has also affected by climate change but we are still able to control our water reserves. So, to our friends who have no water in their areas, we invite them to Penang. They can bathe and drink all they want here,” he said.

Lim was speaking while officiating the completion of a dual piping package project at Gat Lebuh Macallum, here today.

Lim said Penang’s success in avoiding water rationing is attributed to its ‘competency, accountability and transparency’ in managing the resources.

“We dare guarantee and are confident that Penang will not have any water rationing for the next 10 years. I give three times the guarantee that it won’t happen here.

“Come, come to Penang and you can bathe here. This is an achievement for us that despite being the second smallest state, we have the biggest water reserve margin,” he added.
