Malaysians urged to get over fear of share market

KUALA TERENGGANU: Insufficient knowledge, mismanagement of risks and numerous scams have made many Malaysians skeptical of investing in the share market.

Divulging this, International Trade and Industry Ministry deputy secretary-general (trade) Datuk Isham Ishak said that owing to this, many people had shied away from the share market.

He urged Malaysians to change this perception and instead be smart players by taking advantage of the bullish Bursa Malaysia’s composite index which has breached 1,800 points.

“Since the inception of the Securities Commission 25 years ago, a total of RM120 billion was recorded as initial public offering, of which RM15 billion was reserved for bumiputeras.

“Furthermore, the Malaysian Islamic capital market is valued at RM1.89 trillion, or 59.2 per cent of the country’s total (capital market),” Isham said at the ‘Terengganu Share Investment Seminar 2018’ at Permai Hotel.

The event was officiated by Terengganu's Trade and Industry committee chairman Tengku Datuk Putera Tengku Awang.

Isham said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had under the Economic Transformation Plan, envisioned Malaysia to be a high-income nation that was inclusive, fair and sustainable.
