Malaysia calls for cessation of hostilities in Syria

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia urges for all in Syria to adhere to the cessation of hostilities, plaguing the war torn country.

Foreign Ministry said Malaysia remained deeply concerned at the continued deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria and stands in solidarity with the international community in addressing this issue.

"These parties must also fulfil their obligations in enabling unfettered humanitarian access to reach those in need, critically sick and wounded.

"Malaysia also calls for all parties to protect the innocent lives and prevent mass casualties," it said in a statement today.

In this regard, it added Malaysia echoed United Nations Secretary General António Guterres's statement on March 16, expressing his profound regret that United Nations Security Council Resolution 2401 (2018), concerning the cessation of hostilities throughout Syria, had not been implemented.

Since the war in Syria started in 2011, it was estimated 400,000 Syrians had been killed.

More than 5.5 million Syrians were reported to have fled the country and 6.1 million people are displaced internally as of February this year.
