Parents slammed for exposing children to dangers of extreme sports

PUTRAJAYA: Parents who jumped off a bridge in Kuala Kubu Baru with their children recently could be investigated under Section 31 (1) (a) of the Child Act 2001 for exposing their children to physical and emotional danger.

In a statement today, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said taking part in extreme sports with children was not something to be proud of. In fact, she said, it should be avoided for the sake of the children‘s safety.

“I was shocked to see the video recording of a father who was willing to risk his child’s life to carry out the rope swing sport,” she said.

Yesterday, videos of several parents, including Malaysian daredevil Mohd Redha Rozlan, jumping off the 60m high bridge went viral on social media.

In his Instagram video, Redha could be seen jumping with his 2-year-old daughter strapped to his body. His action came under a storm of criticism from netizens.

Rohani urged the public to report such activities to the authorities as stated under Section 29A of the Child Act 2001.

“Awareness and the public reporting such activities through the right channels will curb such incidents from happening again. A child’s life could also be saved,” she said.
