Sarawak declares May 9 a public holiday

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sarawak state government has declared May 9 a public holiday to enable the rakyat to vote in the 14th general election (GE14).

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said the declaration was made pursuant to Section 5 of the Public Holidays Ordinance [Cap.8 (1958 Ed.)].

“Following the announcement by the Election Commission (EC) that polling day for the 14th general election falls on Wednesday (May 9), the state government decided that an additional public holiday be declared throughout Sarawak to enable the rakyat to exercise their democratic right to vote,” the CMO said in a statement today.

On Wednesday, the Prime Minister’s Office announced May 9 as an additional public holiday for peninsular Malaysia states.

It followed the EC’s announcement of the polling day date for GE14.
