'Temporary pass for stranded Syrian in klia2 to be considered if pass security screening'

PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry is considering issuing a temporary pass to Syrian Hassan al Kontar, who has been stranded at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) since March 7.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the temporary pass would only be considered should Hassan passed security screening under a special programme for Syrian migrant placement in Malaysia, which was introduced two years ago.

“Security and health screenings are extremely important, including checking the said person’s background,” Jazlan said when met at the Immigration Day celebration and the 2017 Immigration Department's Excellent Service Award presentation.

Nur Jazlan said the ministry must exercise extra caution especially concerning those from the countries affected by conflict in the middle east.

In this respect, he said security screening was crucial to prevent the entry of those with links to terrorist groups especially Islamic State or also known as Daesh.

It is learnt that Hassan had been in the transit zone in klia2 for 37 days, and relied on good samaritans and kind airport and airline companies staff members for food and basic necessities.

Hassan, a former insurance agent, had expressed worry over the possibility of deportation to his war-torn country.
