Foreign agent link possible, says Zahid on killing of Palestinian lecturer

BAGAN DATUK: Malaysia is looking into the possible involvement of foreign agents in the killing of a Palestinian private university lecturer in front of a condominium in Setapak early this morning.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said authorities are not discounting the possibility based on how the lecturer, Dr Fadi Albatsh was gunned down.

He said initial investigations revealed that the gunmen had arrived on a BMW GS motorcycle.

"I am saddened by all this and according to police information, the victim had been staying here for 10 years and an expert in electrical engineering and (building) rocket.

"His killing could have some links with foreign intelligence agencies or he may also be considered a liability to nations 'unfriendly' to Palestine." he said when officiating the opening of Bangunan Giatmara here.

It was reported that Dr Fadi was gunned down by two men on a high-powered motorcycle who had waited for him for about 20 minutes outside the Idaman Puteri condominium.

The gunmen fired at least 10 rounds on the 35-year old victim as he was walking towards a nearby surau for the Subuh prayers.

Police said they are investigating every angle, including terrorism angle. However, initial investigations showed that the victim did not have any financial issues or known enemies.

Meanwhile, Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said he has ordered the police to thoroughly investigate the matter including getting the cooperation of Interpol, Aseanpol and other related agencies.
