Govt okays 65,000 new jobs in civil service

KUALA LUMPUR: THE government has approved 65,000 new jobs this year to achieve institutional needs and demands in the civil sector, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa said.

He said more civil servants were needed to fill in the positions, following an increase in population.

Ali said departments that required additional workforce were the Education Ministry, police and the Fire and Rescue departments.

“Some people said we don’t need 1.6 million civil servants but only 430,000.

“Our system is different from that of the United States, where the public sector is fixed, and pension and appointments are made under the Public Service Commission .

“The prime minister’s mandate noted that the government will not trim down the size of the public service,” he said at the Chief Secretary to the Government’s Mandate programme with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission staff at Angkasapuri here yesterday.

He advised civil servants to help the government share the nation’s policy on social media.

He said more fake news was being spread, instead of stories about the nation’s achievements.

“We know the nation’s accomplishments, but this is not reflected on social media, as it is full of negativity. In this matter, we cannot just depend on institutions.

“Civil servants should help the government deliver good messages to the people.

“If 100 people share the nation’s accomplishments via WhatsApp or any social media platform, a lot of people will know about the government’s achievements.”

He urged civil servants not to spread fake news to avoid the consequences of such an action.

Present were Communications and Multimedia Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Sharifah Zarah Syed Ahmad and RTM director-general Datuk Abu Bakar Ab Rahim.
