Iconic Sibu Central Market to undergo RM3 million upgrade

SIBU: The iconic Sibu Central Market – the largest indoor market in central Sarawak – will soon be upgraded to cater to and attract more local and foreign visitors.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Abang Openg said facilities at the market, which houses 1,572 stalls, will be improved for the convenience of stall operators and visitors.

He said the state government has allocated RM3 million for the project.

“Upgrading works will be carried out by the Sibu Municipal Council (MPS).

“It involves renovating the ceiling and stalls, and improving pipe facilities at the premises.

“We feel that the market deserves the upgrade not only because it is the place for locals to purchase their supply of daily items, but also (because it has the potential to become) a tourist hotspot,” he told reporters after visiting the market here today.

He was accompanied by Datuk Andrew Wong Kee Yew and Kelvin Kong Sien Chiu, who are Barisan Nasional’s (BN) candidates for the Sibu and Lanang Parliamentary seats respectively.

Also present was Abang Johari’s wife, Datin Patinggi Dayang Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang.

Abang Johari, who is also Sarawak BN chairman, said he is confident that once upgraded, the market will lure more visitors, especially foreign tourists.

“When more tourists come to the market, the sales and income of traders at the premises (will increase),” he added.

MPS deputy chairman Rogayah Jamain said the council also plans to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to beef up security at the market.

She said the RM3 million allocation provided to the council will also be used to give the market a facelift, which includes repainting works.
