Anwar may be released next week, says Wan Azizah

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will not be released from prison today, said PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in response to earlier news reports.

She said the documentation process for Anwar's release would take some time to be completed, adding that he may be released next week.

"I sought an audience with Yang DiPertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V yesterday and the King said the process for Anwar's release would be expedited.

"At the moment, we are identifying the party that has the authority to release Anwar by referring the matter to the Prison Department director-general," she told reporters here today.

Anwar, who is initially due to be released from prison in June, is currently seeking treatment at the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital.

Meanwhile, she said Anwar was happy over Tun Dr Mahathir's appointment as Malaysia's seventh prime minister yesterday.

"He (Anwar) watched the swearing-in ceremony at the hospital last night.

"I think Dr Mahathir's appointment and the people's overwhelming support (for Pakatan Harapan) have given him (Anwar) renewed strength and stamina."
