Pardons Board to convene tomorrow on Anwar's release

KUALA LUMPUR: The Pardons Board Committee chaired by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V is expected to convene tomorrow with regard to the much talked about release of PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar said she was informed of the matter by lawyer R. Sivarasa.

The newly-elected Permatang Pauh however said she did not have further details.

"Insya-Allah (Anwar) will be released tomorrow but I do not know how long the meeting will take," she said when met by reporters at the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital, here, today.

In an update later, Nurul Izzah informed that the committee that was earlier scheduled to meet at 5pm tomorrow has changed it to 11am.

"The meeting will be held at the palace and will be attended by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Prime Minister and other members," she said, adding that Anwar's release is expected to be around noon.

Earlier, Nurul Izzah arrived at the hospital to visit her father before leaving at 1.10pm to meet reporters.

It was reported yesterday that Anwar's younger brother Rusli Ibrahim had confirmed that the former deputy prime minister will be released tomorrow.

Anwar was sentenced to five-years jail for sodomy in March 2014, after the Court of Appeal upheld his guilty verdict.

He was initially due to be released from prison in June.

However Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in a press conference last week said Sultan Muhammad V has consented to granting Anwar a full and immediate pardon.
