Govt must formulate concrete charges before setting up RCI on 1MDB - Dr M

PUTRAJAYA: The government has to formulate concrete charges against those involved in the controversial investment fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) before setting up a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI), said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“We can’t go into the (setting up of a) Royal Commission until we have some concrete charges against them.

“Then we can prefer to set up a Royal Commission to look into many of the different aspects of 1MDB,” he said at a press conference after a meeting with secretaries-general of ministries at the Perdana Leadership Foundation here.

He was replying to a question on the Pakatan Harapan promise to set up an RCI in its 14th general election manifesto.

On the status of sensitive documents, Dr Mahathir said he did not know whether the documents had been destroyed or taken out of offices, but added that he had instructed all ministries that no documents could be brought out or destroyed from now on.--BERNAMA
